Email Programs better then Widows Live?

Any recommendation on an email program. I now have Windows 7 and had to switch to their Windows Live email program. I now tend to leave a lot of emails on my server VS downloading to my local machine which (I think) is causing some lag time to my HS machine when the Jon00 email program kicks in and checks the server. I've had issue's where lights, IR etc will not trigger until after the Jon00 script is done doing its thing.

This is the number one reason I've gone back to XP. I tried running W7 but between the email interface, voice hassles, and loss of using my HSPhone modem it simply wasn't worth it. There are some articles on Google where users have gotten Outlook Express running on W7 but it's yet another obstacle.

I use XP for my HS machine but would like to download my inbox when checking email on that Win7 computer. I don't know that it is possible with Windows Live.
