Can the Ocelot detect the state of my HT receiver if I use the ir output on the Ocelot unit? If not, how can I do this? I need this so when announcements come over my HT speakers HS will turn on the receiver and change to the proper zone or just change to the proper zone depending on whether the receiver is off or on.

A couple of questions. Why not simply use HomeSeer to control the HT receiver and this way HomeSeer will know if it's on or off.
Another way is to use a method to determine weather the receiver is or or off. One way to do this is to use a CRMagnetic magnet around one of the power cord lines (This has been covered before on the bb). Connect this to a powerflash and your can check to see if the device is on of off.

Rupp is correct about the on/off status available from comsumer grade receivers. Some form of external circuitry is needed to measure power or other forms of activity. You can rely upon on/off events such as with a powerflash, but I prefer to obtain status at any time directly from the source.
There is a how-to at cocoontech http://www.cocoontech.com/index.php?showtopic=6864 that shows how to do this with 1-wire switch. The same technique can be used for any discrete input you have available with you HA system such as a joystick, parallel port, and SECU ocelot interface.
Rather than current sensing another common technique is with a wallwart connected to the AC power output of the receiver, assuming it has a switched power output. Use of light sensors on the power LED also do the job. There were commercial versions of these in the past, but I think the only way is not with home-made ones.
Some receiver models have discrete IR codes for power rather than only a power toggle. If you have one of these then you may be able to simply always turn it on before delivery of your announcements. The problem of when to turn it off will still be present and there may also be excessive delay before the announcement will be heard.Comment

You didn't mention what receiver you have, but many receivers (my Sony, for one) have "discrete" on and off IR signals that you may be able to use. The IR signal that the remote control sends is a toggle: If the receiver is ON, the signal turns it OFF, and vice versa. The discrete On and discrete Off do just what the name implies: If you send a discrete ON and the receiver is already ON, nothing happens. If it is OFF the discrete ON will turn it On. It seems like that would directly address your situation, in that you could always send the discrete ON to make sure the receiver is ON. If you have a set of IR codes that need to be loaded for the Ocelot, you can use IRmax software to load them. If you look on the applied digital forums you will see discussion on this. Otherwise you can just learn the discrete codes and use them in cmax.Originally posted by Rupp View PostJames
