Answering my own problem...
Having walked away from this and come back to it I thought I woud approach from a slightly different direction.
I enabled the debug Log in mcsT and tried to fathom what was going on from the detail provided. One issue is that it is doing so much it is difficult to read so I took a local copy of the file in the Homeseer folder and went through it.
The log pointed towards the phantom device being presented by the Temp05... I shutdown Homeseer and connected directly to the Temp05 with Hyperterminal and sure enough the phantom device was being reported by the Temp05.
I removed the device from the Temp05 in s/w and reconnected to Homeseer and the database appears to be updating...
