24volts actuator

My heating system works with (5) 24volts actuator (valve) My goal is to be able to read when they are in use. Am I on the right track?

There are two approaches. One is to read the 24VAC voltage on the actuator coil with something like the HVAC monitor from hobby-boards.com. This is based on the 2450 quad channel A/D. The other is to insert a devices such as a relay that has a coil that is in parallel with the actuator coil so the relay enegrizes when the actuator energizes. The DS2405 would then be used to sense the state of the relay contact.
