Script to update a linux file?

Hello. Is there a way to have a script write to an output file on my Linux HS3 server? I want to create an event that when the conditions are met a line is appended to a file. Specifically I want to create an event that checks when my nest thermostat turns the heat on and off and put an entry in the file. I think I can write these messages to the HS3 log but I want to be able to write the message in a format I can easily open with excel and do some analysis on.

    Thanks

This post answers my questions just in case someone is looking to do the same. The ability to run a bash script through an event and pass parms gives me the ability to log my thermostat changes. Cool that HS3 can run a bash script I thought it was limited to VB only. Good stuff.
