Ted or Envi - Which components do I need

    Hi All

I'm new to HS and slowly building my z-wave network. I want to add power monitoring and was wondering if anyone has experience of both Envi and Ted. IF I bought Envi, which model and what components do I need?

    Thanks

    Mark

There's only one Envi model and HomeSeer sells it here:

This unit is wireless so it will not affect any powerline protocols. This is very important if you have any X10 devices.

Does it connect to HS Server via USB?

Yes. You simply install the plugin, install the USB drivers, and configure your plugin parameters and it will start capturing data. This is after installing the clamps in the meter box.

If you need accurate data choose TED

I have both units. Both have pros and cons.
Pro - ENVI - Super simple to install and wireless data transmission

Pro - TED is more accurate then ENVI since they also are reading voltage and power factor(probably not to big a deal if you are residential and the Utilty company defaults to 1.0 power factor)Formula if needed - Power = Voltage x Current x Power Factor

Con - ENVI not as accurate as TED. ENVI states that the unit is not a replacment for your power meter on the outside of your residence and will not be as accurate(only reads WATTs).

Con - TED uses power line to send data. Interference will be an issue with old X10. I use insteon and do not have any issues.

Con - TED 1001 uses FTDI serial-usb chip which on many systems is not stable and drops the connection. TED 5000 series does not have this issue since they are using a gateway device.

Con - TED requires you to install two extra breakers in box to read voltage.(Need an electrician unless you are familiar with the dangers associated with AC and have experience)

Both will allow you to lower your power bill. Remember you can't manage what you don't measure and visibility helps you change habits. The units will also allow you to do some load shedding. Be careful though my wife does not like it when I shut down the HVAC and some lights automatically based on power usage.

              thanks TechNerd

Think I'll go with Envi. Not worried about deadly accuracy, it's mainly to get an idea of relative consumption
