Here is another z-wave plus remote. It uses AAA bats. I've not used it but it looks good.

Yes and yes.

Not the most cost friendly, but damn reliable with a 10 year battery.

I've got a couple of these coming that reportedly work with the Con Bee II USB stick and W.Vuyk's JowiHue plugin.

I think the easiest solution, is grabbing a pico remote. All of these options are cool ideas, but seem to be more work then it's worth? It also possibly introduces more room for failure.

Just my 2 cents.

What is required to make this work? Just the remote or do you need some sort of receiver? Z-Wave, ZigBee, other?

You'll need a hub, yes. A lutron Caseta pro hub will be sufficient.

There is that up front cost for the hub, but if you plan on buying a couple remotes it will pay itself off. Plus, the reliability you will gain and the 10 year battery life.

Well worth it!

$90 US plus? I will stick with my homemade arduino remote. I can put a huge battery in it for that much.
