Wow, is this thread ever popular... ! Can I join the club... ?

Lucky for me, I live in an "old crochety people" neighborhood with very few kids around.

However, I did have an egging once... and I find the occasional empty bags of chips and soda cans at the street corner, on the edge of my property...

I don't give out candy on Halloween anymore coz too many of the kids that show up are taller than me and I'm 6 foot 3 inches...

There was this one kid though that used to crack me up at Halloween... He was about 30 inches tall and was dressed in a lion costume from head to toes.

The first thing he did when we opened the door, was to let out the loudest lion roar he could manage...(which was actually quite faint...) he was hilarious .

Ya know, when I was growing up in the 1950's/60's. The teacher used a ruler across the knuckles, if that didn't get your attention, the principle had a paddle... If you got on your bike after school and rode back to the school, you could see the teachers leaving at 5:30 - 6pm carrying more books and papers to be graded than you had to carry home

10 years ago or so my youngest comes home from high school and promptly spouts off that his teacher said he has rights, I threatened to knock his teeth out, he then said go ahead and I will have you arrested, teachers now have non student days to do what my teachers accepted as part of the daily job.

What ever happened to common sense? if you look the part, chances are you play the part, but today that is called profiling. I dislike the fact that my life is more than on the downhill side, but at the rate the general public is deteriorating, it might not be a bad thing....

I guess I'll join the rant - I'm 49 and have an 8 year old. Most of her friends' parents are 10-20 years younger than we are and it shows. They don't teach their children to respect anyone, let them mouth off, use questionable and sometimes foul language, and accept no responsibility for anything. My daughter is being brought up to say please and thank you. We're certainly not perfect, but we are trying to teach her to be kind and considerate of other people. Today's parents think spending Saturday morning at some organized event while sucking down a giant Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts coffee and chatting with their friends is spending quality time with their kids. And half the time the kids are drinking some sugar laden, caffeinated drink too! It is SCARY.

Ian, i am certainly not an expert on this but my understanding is that yes a 420 TV Line camera would give you face recognition.

My current setup gives my VERY basic access to my cameras from HS. I am not sure what could be done with this new system. I would think at the very least you could link to the webserver from HS to view the cameras.

I am going to look into this in more detail tonight. It almost sounds too good to be true and i cannot find any customer reviews for this particular model.

In any case it appears to be far better than the 4 camera system i currently have.

It seems common sense isn't all that common anymore. I had mine knocked into me... literally. Perhaps that's what's missing.

In my school, they used a rubber strap and usually showed no mercy.

Reading your post made me think of Mrs. Smitzer, in all my grade school years the only time we ever saw her smile was after some poor kid got his ^$$ beat. Evidently left an impression on me to remember her name 40+ years later... and she was so mean looking and ugly (ugly might be the reason she was mean)

I've really enjoyed reading this thread. As a father of 3 teenagers, I understand many of the challenges discussed.

As an employer with currently 11 employees ranging in age from teenager to in their 60s (5 under 23, 1 in his 30s, 3 in 40s, 1 in 50s, 1 in 60s), I can really see the generational differences in work ethic, priorities, etc. It's something that most of us realize but is really much clearer to me now. I have 2 more people that will start this month as well (1 in 20s, 1 in 40s).

As far as that camera/DVR set goes from Cosco goes, couple of comments.

It is a pretty good deal for what you are getting but, there are some things you need to keep in mind.

                    1) That DVR can only record 60 frames per second. 30 frames per second/per camera is full real time. On that combo package, if you split the frame rate across all 9 cameras, you are getting less than 7 frames per second. You really should have at least twice that much for proper viewing.

                    2) Camera prices vary greatly and there are differences in the quality of the cameras. Although those cameras do have some small IRs on them, they do not have day/night shutoffs.

the 60fps is shared, but only shared by active cameras, right? so if only 1 or two cameras are on, they would be able to record at their full capability? if all 9 were on that would be pretty bad video quality, though, right?

also, its not a huge deal if the IR emitters don't turn off, is it?

Yes, the 60 fps is shared but typically you have to pre-assign how many frames are dedicated to each camera. It's not a dynamic allocation.

Sorry, I forgot to address the second part of your question.Yes, the IRs will turn off on those cameras during the day. The issue is that some cameras also have a mechanical shutoff in the lens that will allow for better night image capturing.

Well we shall find out soon enough, mine should be here this week.

I was thinking that the fps is shared between active cameras. So if they only record on motion then there should only be 2-3 recording at a time. That's how i read it anyway.

What do you mean by a mechanical shut off? What exactly is being shut off?

Not an expert at this so I'll quote from a camera manufacturer that offers this feature

The camera's dual-mode employs an automatically removable IR-cut filter mechanism, which enables superior imaging performance in both daytime and nighttime conditions. By day, the camera provides full color imaging with the IR-cut filter in place. As light levels fall, the camera automatically moves the IR-cut filter to the side and transitions to black and white mode with active infrared LED illumination, enabling full night vision capability.

anxiously awaiting your opinion/discovery, Neil, on the fps being shared dynamically or statically, as well as night vision performance. if you like it, i'm gettin one. btw, how'd it go telling her, cuz i'll have to burn that bridge when i get there as well (better to ask forgiveness than permisison)
