    Linux ISO Question

I have a Linux boot CD of which I have been trying to modify one file and having a couple of issues. I can use it to create the OS then modify afterwards but I would prefer to modify it before. It's a simple text file which is a script which writes one of the RC.d boot files. I am getting a checksum error in the kernal start when it boots. Any suggestions. So far I am at the point which I found a program which lets me edit a file in the ISO and saves it.
