  • New (to me) machine coming

ok so I was trying to put the innards of a dell xps into a shallow depth rack case but that lead to many issues... so off to ebay... few glasses of wine later and seeing a bit fuzzy...

i found this deal and timer was running out quickly so not much time to research...

for $117 I still ended up with a supermicro case with 4 hotswap drives, 2 x xeon cpus and 6x4gb dimms...

    anyway...

my thinking now that I notice this since I am on a monitor now (purchased via cell phone so smaller screen ... note 3..)

    i see 2 issues
    1. memory runs hot and has an alarm... converted to 261F !!!!!!!
    2. 2.5ghz cpus running @ 1.9999ghz

so im going to wait for this to come in and first thing to do is reset bios... hope that does it for the cpu and memory issue... anyone see anything that also maybe contributing to it?
is the memory not good in that machine?

I deployed a number of those X7 motherboards, albeit in 2U rackmount cases. The Kinsington RAM should be just fine, though I never had any RAM run hot like that. They may have taken those screenshots after a stress test.

Those motherboards with a pair of processors do make a bit of heat. You will find it uses a lot of energy, probably 250-350 watts.

I've also never used that case, it looks like there is a single ducted fan to blow just below the the processors. In the rackmount cases, there is usually a shroud over the processors and memory to make sure they get good airflow. The case looks like this mid-tower

which should have been shipped with a 120mm rear fan. A rear fan might help.

not planning on using the case as I have a 2u shallow depth rack case I plan on using. It has 6 internal 3.5"drive bays so will work perfectly. I will add fans to get it where it needs to go.

on power.. yeah... not worried. I have reduced my footprint so much with LED bulbs all over the house.. I can handle it going up a bit...

plus this one machine will get me to turn 3 others off...

fyi I know no one is going to pay this but newegg and amazon have the case for sale... i know mine is used and a bit scratched..

so that case is $600!!!!! I will craigslist it for $250 to try and get a bite and ill take a lot less.. maybe even able to walk away with $40 in my pocket and free dual mobo/ram/cpus... and the mobo isnt cheap either..
