Here since the early Homeseer 2 days of using Windows server have utilized Digi USB hubs and Digi 8 port Edgeport serial devices.

It has been only one USB port utilized for automation to 7 plus 16 serial ports. Today I still prefer talking RS-232 or USB to Serial devices over USB devices; that is me though.

Newest Homeseer 3 boxes have no serial ports today.

The configuration was configured to have all of the servers in one room one section. All of the controllers in another section adjacent to the fuse panel with one extended 25 foot USB cable.

Early network stuff utilize a Digi USB Anywhere, Lantronix, Quantech boxes.
