Interesting use of a laser pointer.

Interesting use of a laser pointer. You may want to move your Google and Alexa devices away from the window Of course your voice through the window is easier

Yikes! I'm going to go check all of ours to see if they can be seen through a window!

This is an easy fix with duct tape. Wrap it in duct tape and throw it in the trash.

I don't get it. Are they pulsing the laser? How are they doing the commands?

“[B]y modulating an electrical signal in the intensity of a light beam, attackers can trick microphones into producing electrical signals as if they are receiving genuine audio,” said researchers with the University of Michigan and the University of Electro-Communications (Tokyo) in a Monday research paper.

MEMS microphones feature a small, built-in plate called the diaphragm, which when hit with sounds or light sends electrical signals that are translated into commands. Instead of voice commands, researchers found that they could “encode” sound using the intensity of a laser light beam, which causes the diaphragm to move and results in electrical signals representing the attacker’s commands.

Reverse of how you can listen to voices inside a room by "reading" vibrations of the glass window pane with a laser. They are probably keeping silent on the full details to avoid script-kiddie abuse, but it does not take much to reproduce.

First there was drive-by-WiFi-fun with a Pringle-can, now there will be drive-by-ordering fun -- "Alexa, order 800 adult diapers, confirm order!".

Amazon gave perfect example themselves during Superbowl commercial with Harrison Ford's dog ordering a truck load of dog-food

Not too much of a secret since they published a research paper on the technique. https://lightcommands.com/20191104-Light-Commands.pdf

A novel hack but probably not as easy to do in the wild as in a closed environment like a lab. For this to work in the wild one would have to have a clear shot to be able to aim the LASER through a window at one of the microphones. It is not like using a LASER to measure the vibration of a window to monitor audio since the LASER has to actually hit the microphone.
