    LED Lights and generators

Question for those of you running portable generators during an outage.

    WE
have a generac 7500... so big enough to handle most of our needs. When running it the other night, my lights flickered quite a bit. I replaced all my lights with LEDs... ironically because of the lower wattage, but think this may be an issue with the light and less of the generator. Do you all see similar behavior?

When we were traveling the country in our 5th Wheel, we used 2 Honda generators with sine wave output and our 120v LEDs didn’t flicker.

It depends on the quality of the output of the generator. Try Googling "led lights flicker when using a generator" and you will see more complaints about this than you can read.

what is funny is that in my old house of a few months back, I don't remember it happening as much (with same generator). Do you all just put up with it?

(per another thread)… looking into a whole house generator, but early signs are that it will be cost prohibitive for the amount we really need it. My UPSs are also a wreck when on generator, so likely going to move those to a "double conversion" style UPS - also more costly.

My wife is like... "it's romantic.. don't worry about it".... .
