Checkout the LED lamps at www.cree.com. No idea about cost, but they are cutting edge.

I replaced all the ceiling cans in my house with the Cree's. They work great. This year all my Christmas lights are LED, my new fridge uses all LED lighting, and my new LCD TV uses all LED backlighting. The TV alone uses about 100W less than the same size TV with cold cathode backlighting. In each case, not only is the electricity significantly less than the alternatives, but the performance of the solution is better.

your post pretty much reflects opinions expressed over in the UKHA forum on Yahoo - which was prompted by the extreme lack of availability of 100W incandescent bulbs on the shelves of all the major UK retailers right now!

A snipped from The Scotsman newspaper.

As of the 31st January 2009 it will become illegal to produce and/or SELL 100W incandescent light bulbs within the UK, 60W and 40W are to be phased out during 2009!

Strange, no mention of 15W. Me thinks I may have to stockpile a few.
