  • Anybody seen a product like this?

I would like to monitor the power used by my computers. I can find 2 types of electricity meters in the UK:

    1) Whole house - many connect to the computer for monitoring - usually wirelessly
    2) Plug in - just some LCD type output.

What I really need is a plug in model that has a (USB?) connection to the computer. Has anybody seen such a beast on their virtual travels?

    Thanks
    Steve

Are all the PC's in the same place? If so you could run them off one 4 way adaptor, build a junction box into the cable where you split the live/neutral/earth, mount a current clamp around the live inside the box and on the other side wire it back to a 13a plug.

You could then use one of the more commercially available units like the CurrentCost (for which I love it) with a 2nd transmitter unit & clamp (or with the original if you are not monitoring the whole of the house.
      My Plugins:

      Pushover 3P | DoorBird 3P | Current Cost 3P | Velleman K8055 3P | LAMetric 3P | Garadget 3P | Hive 3P |
      Yeelight 3P | Nanoleaf 3P

I think that's the same product that BWIRED uses. He has like 30 appliances monitored on his website:

Looks like the choices for HA switching in Europe are going to improve. For what I want to do this seems like a sledgehammer to crack a nut though.

The "At the start of 2009 a UK-style (3-pin) version will go on sale, but until then Plugwise Circles can be used with travel adapters (two per Circle!) here in the UK." bit worries me - it's nearly September!

Still something to watch for future development - would need a HS plugin of course.

I thought about hacking a whole house unit for this, might do that if nothing else works - just can't figure out though why there isn't something like the 'Kill-A-Watt' with a USB lead coming out

Have thought the same about many devices (my caller ID unit and gas meter especially), I keep having thoughts about mounting a USB webcam infront of the LCD screens of these devices and then reading the data into some sort of character recognition software for onward forwarding to HS...I can't imagine i'm the only one who has thought of this though, and probably would fail miserably.

Before buying Plugwise, be sure to read a couple of the topics over in the Plugwise section:
                  http://www.domoticaforum.eu/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=39

One you might like to read beforehand is this one (the user named Reinder in this is a spokesperson from Plugwise.)

Aside from that Plugwise is a nicely engineered product.
