  • Oil Tank Monitoring Challenge!

In the UK thieves have started robbing houseowners of their newly delivered expensive central heating oil. (They seem to follow the delivery lorry, then return to steal the oil). There are various dumb level gauge/monitoring devices available on the market, some with in-built siren alarms. But is there any way we could find a device which we could monitor from HomeSeer? I challenge you to find a way! If we could simply get the tank level reading into HomeSeer we could build a script to detect rapid level decreases and handle an alarm intelligently. Any takers?

I've got no need to monitor any liquid levels here but an idea that I often have (and indeed some might use) is to harness the power of ultrasonics. These sorts of devices http://www.sparkfun.com/products/8501 output RS232 (so likely to need minimal effort to interface with HS) and will output a value according to the measured distance (which could be read into a script). I imagine that oil is thick enough for the ultrasonic wave to bounce off.

Need to take a few things into consideration though re protection of the device, range, mounting etc first though - and I have never used one, just seems like a possible solution.

Funny this should come up, only this morning I was at a petrol station that some little cherubs had come up, smashed the caps of the tanks (28,000 litres x 3 tanks) and pumped out an unknown amount of petrol/diesel - on a very busy main road at 4AM. I was expecting some sort of electronic measuring device to give us an instant idea of the amount stolen only to find a bloke does it with a dipstick....guess technology has not reached this part of the country yet.

Has a buzzer. so a simple opto interface could work !
