If you want to check that you have the update installed, check your Update History for the following:

        MS17-010

When checking my systems I get sent to a "monthly Security Update Roundup" as a standalone download. This is out of hand. That's probably involved with whatever broke HS3 for me 100% today. More (all?) plugin developers need to insure Linux comparability.

I look longingly upon all of the HS3 users here in the forum.

              Ransomware infections reported worldwide

So, MS17-010 is tied to the SMBv1 protocol vulnerabilities. M$ has been slowly moving away from SMBv1 for a while. This is a very important update to take since The ransomware are in question appears to have been recently released. It is titled the "wannacry" cryptolocker (supposedly tied to stolen and later leaked NSA offensive cyber weaponry) and takes advantages of vulnerabilities inherent in windows systems that still support SMBv1. What's more many secondary systems surround windows SMB based file sharing do not eliminate use of SMBv1. An example of this is that many multifunction printer manufacturers still do not inherently use only NTLMv2 and SMBv2 or greater protocols for authentication and scanning to share folders.

                  Good news Colin!

It seems that the news of said stuff spread fast globally and initially it was absent here in the US. Guessing it just wasn't sensationalist enough? Really though shows that Windows being a primary used OS all over the place. This was the biggest one so far and while being told not to pay the ransom; mostly folks did pay any how.

Yup; here on utilize SMTP email stuff for automation on the old Wintel servers (which are now Linux any how) and never did use pop for Homeseer (from the get go in the 1990's).

Geez recall now playing Star Trek on the old university computer housed on campus (Wilson hall - government building actually - that had a running track in the ceiling with curved ends pitched towards the floor) signing in to use a green screen terminal and using these cryptic commands...it was fun though...and playing on an old teletype machine in a mop closet next to my then physics labs (playing with lasers). No ransom-ware worries back then.

Moving towards the a la carte on demand use of Windows these days with a base in Linux. I am almost weaned from Windows. (suckling the window teets) except for the touch screens.

Another picture of the global presence.

A cyber-attack that hit organisations worldwideBut in a BBC interview, he warned that it was only a temporary fix. "It is very important that people patch their systems now because there will be another one coming and it will not be stoppable by us," he said.
