C&C servers aren't useful if there isn't anything to control.

Keeping track of Zero-day exploits and apply work-around until patch is available is much more important.

You are absolutely right about the importance of network security. But also remember that some of those articles you see are written by alarmists with little understanding of network security and what the problem actually installs, but definitely want you to read their article.
