I think they made one of those on the screen savers using a cardboard box. Kind of like the solar cloths drier which turns out to be a peice of rope.

Which one to buy? You can get the page size fresnel lens at an office supply for a couple of dollars, and probably the cardboard box tossed in for free. Below are some typical links to the gizmos.

No silly a real projector. I can't believe the prices. Never really looked into them before. The cheapest decent one I have seen so far is 500.00. But don't want to spend that much and be disapointed. So am asking your guys opinions and which projectors you all use

Check the replacement bulb prices before you buy. A while back they were almost as much as the cost of the projector. If bulb life is short, then everyday use might be expensive.

There are two competing technologies in projectors (three, if you count zoomkat's): LCD and DLP. IMHO, DLP is superior, with much better contrast. But LCD is currently cheaper.

The bulb cost problem is common to both technologies.

BTW, that lens kit is crap. It projects an image so dim that you need a totally darkened room to see a faint picture.

                    Projectors

There was a diy projector on Toms hardware

                    http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20041113/index.html

This is probably as good as it gets for DIY... I skipped the DIY, bit the bullet and purchased a Sony VPL-HS10 back when that was the latest model.

It was around $2700, ouch.... seems expensive but if you watch a lot of moves and really enjoy the big screen it's well worth it.

You can buy less expensive projectors and be completely happy with them. I wanted one that was native 16x9 resolution. And one that was really designed for movies, and not for powerpoint presentations. It's native resolution is 1366x768, running the HTPC off that is extreamley impressive as well as watching Comcast HD on my 8foot diagnoal screen.

If your the sort of person who turns on the TV at 5:00 and watches till 11:00 every day, bulbs could be expensive, but your a couple hours a day person, yes it's still expensive, but consider what it cost to go out to a movie.... and drag along your gf / wife or family...

It's an entertainment cost, and most of use are on tight budgets... But if you don't turn on your projector just for the heck of having it on, a bulb can last you several years. I almost have 2 years on mine now, and I've used around 1200 hours of the build which "should" get 3000 hours

The DIY solution from Tom's looks pretty good, but certainly isn't going to look nice in your livingroom when it's off... consider the WAF or GAF.

                      Hi fungun <SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_614232", true); </SCRIPT>

Not sure how thing operate price wise over on your side of the pond. But, on this side, GB wise, if you wish a projector to project TV, Video DVD, etc, we are far cheaper to buy a video projector that is designed for laptop presentations (Powerpoint etc) and give it a TV feed from a computer with a TV card. The reason is that these projectors only accept Video/Audio feeds.

Considering the main difference is it does not have a tuner or RF facility our TV projectors are a rip off and tend to be of poorer quality for some reason. The poorer quality could be because the ones I have seen are being streached to their max for screen size or are badly set up.

regarding e-bay, the English press and television recently had fun over various scams being run on e-bay, note these were not being run by e-bay, but e-bay was not at the begining being very helpfull to either stop them or assist the poor buyer who had lost their money. It was the press reporting this, therfore some licence was probably taken in the reporting.

I personally would be causious buying on e-bay if I was talking about more than, lets say 10 bucks!

Who am I to talk, I've always been outbid at the last second.
