    Thanks for the feedback guys--
    Yes I tried using the status first (most logical) but if its inactive for a short period (20-30 seconds) it doesn't respond.
    My event logic is very basic, probably the same "if the time is sunset..."
    I have that turned off "Do not update device last change time if device value does not change: " , maybe that's incorrect?

    Its probably something simple in my logic that I'm not understanding--

      The HS virtual device corresponding to the physical sensor should be updating each time the sensor reports a change (open/closed) and should maintain that value until the sensor reports another change. Your event should be able to use that virtual device's value/status as a condition regardless of when the sensor last reported its status. It's not clear what you mean when you say "it doesn't respond". Are you trying to poll the sensor for some reason?

      A screen shot of your event would be very helpful in troubleshooting.
