Man
Some computer specialist..... That was my first home automation project when I got out of college 6 years ago. I got a X10 firecracker and transceiver for $5 on X10.com. I ran a webpage on my Linux box and had a cgi script that would turn on and off the firecracker. I hooked up my XMAS lights in our bar room to the transceiver and all the people at work would turn on and off my xmas lights. No password- no nothing.
He doesn't need a $150 copy of homeseer for this project- he needed $5 worth of parts and a free version of apache.
Sad....HS3 Pro Edition 3.0.0.435 (Windows Server 8.1 on ESXi box)
Plug-Ins Enabled:
Z-Wave:,RaspberryIO:,AirplaySpeak:,Ecobee:,

Yes I think it's funny, especially the way he duped the American Press, of course that would never happen over here, would it!!!
Can't help but think it would have been a lot more fun, and easier, just to have used HomeSeer.sigpic

Not being a Photoshop type person myself, I think that what he actually did is harder than what he claimed to do. He created a virtual pan/tilt webcam, complete with changing lights, simulated traffic (pedestrian, vehicles & airplanes) and appropriate weather and snowfall conditions. I think that would make for a interesting home automation interface, producing images of various rooms with various lighting enabled and possibly other conditions. Neater than a glowing icon on a floorplan map.
