Move from old PC to new one.

Guys I want to move from an old PC to a new one. Is there any software that will allow you to ghost the boot drive and move that to a new PC? I tried to create an image using Acronis True Image and move it to the new PC but it would never boot. Is this possible?

The problem is most likely a driver issue with your new motherboard. Alot of the time windows needs a new install when you do serious hardware changes. Sometimes you don't though, just depends.

You probably got the blinking cursor

If you couldnt boot using the acronis software:

Make sure you have a PS2 keyboard plugged in before letting Acronis reboot. That is what worked for me. I stuck a PS2 mouse in to for good measure.

Apparently a common issue with USB peripherals.
Acronis is the best imaging software IMO.

Otherwise I agree with the above.

        Dave,
It actually tries to boot just fine but can't. I guess the hardware changes are to extreme.

Well if you copy the image over....

and everything goes well, just insert your OS install CD and when it prompts for a repair let it do the repair. All of your programs data will be left intact. However the registry will be new requiring you to reinstall your applications.

It may be fun to do a fresh install. I did on my last install including a fresh version of HS. I swear HS runs better than it has ever. Including VR.

            Rupp

There is a function called SYSPREP with XP that is supposed help do that. You will need to run SYSPREP on the booted harddrive. We just did a major upgrade from NT to XP and thats how it was done. I can find out more from my guys if this doesnt tell you enough.

Something else that can work is too fool plug in play into redefining the the whole HAL layer.
            • Set a restore point
Copy all of the system drivers you will need under a c:\ directory
              Open Device manager
Delete anything and everything you can under the system devices heading
Ignore the reboot requestets, just keep moving
              Have the XP CD handy

Reboot when you have deleted as many as you have. You will have to reboot 5 - 10 times as it finds its way, and reboot when it tells you to

If you are going between systems that are primarily intel chipset based, you should do ok. Maybe a little hand tweaking of drivers when you are done, especially video.

If it doesnt work, go back to your old system and run a restore

I think sysprep is a tool to enable you to build multiple new machines from a single master machine, all new machines have to have similar (not identical) spec hardware. I don't think this will help Rupp who is essentially moving from one appears to be moving from one hardware platform to another.

Personally I'd go with the rebuild option as this is a good opportunity to start fresh and check out your build documentation (you do have some don't you ) <img src="images/icons/icon7.gif">
