HSP picks up and HANGS UP immediantly

I've got myself in to a hell of a jam... I simply cannot seem to get HSP to say, record anything without it promptly hanging up on my when calling externally.

    What did I do wrong?

We need more information. Are you using silence detection? If so what are your settings?

Silence dection On or Off makes no difference... but when it was on, set midway for sensativity and the default of 8 seconds of silence.

I experienced something similar when I was setting up HSP. Do you have your internal house wiring set up on the house side of the modem? If so, you might want to unplug all your phones and test again. I had a couple of phones that were causing the modem to see the phone as off hook which disconnected the modem as you are seeing.

I have double-checked the wiring... all good. I even swapped phones just to make sure it isn't a specific phone causing issues. It's not the phone. The modem is buzzing/noisy and I have done all I can to isolate the noise (ground loop). Everytime it picks up it's noisy and if it does record it's full of static. Not sure what to do at this point... cross fingers I guess.

It looks like the modem is seeing the phone going on and off hook at the wrong times. This is detected by current changes on the line. This could be caused by too many phones connected to the phone jack on the modem. Try just one phone. Also, some cordless phones change the current on the line and just won't work with the modem. I know some Panasonic cordless phones can cause this problem.

              Another thing to check

If you have the phone wiring set up to go to the modem first and then to the other phones in the house, you will get exactly the results you are getting if the input and output lines are plugged into the modem in reverse. The house phones wiring must be connected to the PHONE side of the modem. Incoming line goes to the line side.

Done that a couple of times before I finally marked the lines themselves so I didn't get them reversed again.

Do you have any Dish Network hardware conected to your phone lines?
If so, is CID enabled on any of them?
If so, that could be your problem. Dish Network hardware does something weird when it rceives CID that makes HS think the phone has been placed off hook and back on. I had this problem for several weeks. Disabling CID on the Dish boxes solved the problem - they're still connected to the phone line, just with CID disabled on them.
