CM11a Remote Location

Is it possible to remotely locate the CM11a. I have my computer in a room now running HS where the signal does not reach some of my house. I installed a Leviton Coupler/Repeater and this did not help.

I was wondering if I could remotely locate the CM11a to a better location by extending the cable from teh serial port. What distance is the longest I could make this? Could I use an unused phone line in the house to extend the CM11a cable?

I believe the best location for the CM11A is at the breaker panel. If the Leviton coupler repeater is not working I would suspect either it is bad or you have something on the line that is loading down the line big time. Find it by shutting off circuit breakers while monitoring performance as a first step.

I used Cat5 and spliced into the RJ11 cable. About 150 Ft. run and have not had a problem.

I have some extra RS-232 to Cat5 adapters I will sell cheap.

John, do you have a good wiring diagram for the RS232 to CAT 5 adapters? I tried wiring some myself but could not get them to work. I used the instructions here: http://www.zytrax.com/tech/layer_1/c...tech_rs232.htm and used the signal names as a common reference...

Oh yeah, I was going from DB25 to RG45/CAT5 to DB9 Should I have had the rx/tx flip-flopped?

I ended up hooking up 2 6-foot and 1 10-foot RS232 cables (that I had laying around) to get the distance I needed and it's working fine, although it's considerably more bulky to route than the cat5 would've been.

Personally I put my CM11A in the circular file area of my basement and have been very pleased with it ever since.

I used these adapters (25-pinD to RJ-45 and 9-pinD to RJ-45) when I remoted my Ocelot using Cat5E cable.

I believe the best alternative to the CM11 is the ACT T103 (or some number close to that...). This is the one that HomeSeer sells. If you are planning to "remote" the ACT unit, it doesn't seem to like a long cable, but in all likelihood, it would not be needed. I recall that the CM11 might use a 300 Baud connection, where the T103 uses 9600 Baud with an option for a higher speed.

I also use the ACT coupler / repeater. It costs more than the Leviton, but the Leviton did not work for me. It's gathering dust.

Since I am using quite a few SmartHome Lamplinks and Switchlinks (all 2-way devices), I need the extra relaibility that I get from this setup. Also, I use quite a few filters on my computers, TV's and other equipment that can cause loss of signal.

But when the RF stuff takes off (Zensys), this will all be obsolete.
