Do Verizon DSL and Homseer Mix?

I am helping a friend get started with hs. He has Verizon DSL. They block port 80. I don't know if that means anything. I am trying to get hs to work via the web. I have it set to port 10045. I am using no-ip as he has a dynamic ip. It's not working. If you type in http://xxx.no-ip.com:10045, you get nothing. You should get the homseer webserver. I looked at his DSL setup. His ip is 192.168.1.47. His real ip is something like 138.89.26.xxx. I tried using the real ip, like http://138.89.26.xxx:10045, and it still doesn't work. I looked into his network properties, and his ip address is listed as the 192.168 #. He does not have a router. Is there a way to make his ip show the actual ip, or does Verizon block this? I just want to know if it is possible for him to set up hs as a webserver with Verizon DSL. No zone alarm, no firewall. I turned everything off, still doesn't work. Thanks.

use a low cost router which will remap port numbers. Many will do so.

      Steve,

I am a pretty fast learner. Could you explain this a little more? I ran a port scan, and every single port on his computer came up stealthed or closed. How can a router change this?

Well, my friends, it appears I have stumbled on to the cause of my frustration...

The modem I am using is a Westell 2200. I read that it has a built in router and firewall! I am guessing that it is set at the factory to block all incoming ports! This is probably why I cannot set up a webserver on any port. I tried to set up homeseer on about 100 ports (what a waste of time!) I even ran several port scans, and they all came up with the same thing: all ports blocked or stealthed! I can't wait to get up tomorrow and drive back to my friends house and test my theory. If anyone has any info on this maybe to confirm what I am saying, please let me know. I will let you know the outcome.

If for some reason you are not able to log into the router and shut off the firewall and configure port fowarding, then contact verison and tell them you need to be able to connect to your home computer from the office using PCAnywhere (don't mention you are running a web server). This gets into the "business need" space and may get action a little more quickly.

            Beach,
Most of the DSL routers are configured using an embedded web server. Try putting the router's IP address in a browser and see if you can get to a logon screen:

            http://192.168.1.47/

There is probably a default login and password which should be in the router instructions.

Some googling revealed this site: http://support.easystreet.com/easyds...tell-setup.htm
It explains how to setup the router. It should work as long as verizon hasn't changed hte defualt username and password.

Byt the way, the admin webserver on most consumer routers is http://192.168.1.1, so always try this first.

Not always true. With Linksys routers that is correct but often times the address is often 192.168.0.1. If you want to find out what it is open up a command prompt on your computer and type in "ipconfig" and then whatever your default gateway is will be the address for your router. Note, you should only try to go in and make changes if it is a router sitting your house so don't try to go out and make changes on your ISP's router!

jrfuda is right tho (as he said most, not all), as someone who has deployed many cable modems and dsl modems and many other network appliances, 192.168.1.1 is used very frequently. Also be aware that with i.e. cablemodems (such as a motorola surfboard), you would use your own router such as a linksys or whatever, the linksys would be the default gateway, eventho the modem has it's own address (my motorola uses 192.168.1.1 by default. I have my own firewall/router), so in this case, the default gateway would not be the cable modem.

I just had to deploy a DSL modem and a netgear vpn router, the only way I could get things to work correctly is by changing the dsl router from router mode to bridged mode (and let the netgear router do the routing/firewalling).

Thank God, what I said above worked. It was as simple as 192.168.1.1, and configure just like a real router. Everything is working fine.
