Does this have to be installed in one of the light switch positions (wired in)? or is this something you just stick to the wall with tape or something similar?

with Tape! no-go... most likely screws in before you put the faceplate

Yeah, it looks thin from most pics, but it's actually a fairly deep switch (see pic) from the side. GE/Jasco and Cooper each make a 'fake' switch that can be either screwed or affixed with double-sided tape.
