    MS16a vs MS10a

Hi i have a few ms16 motions sensors and the work great and was thinking of getting more then i saw the MS10a's which are more expensive but seem to to be security sensors.

for homeseer applications is it worth spending the extra cash 49usd vs 29usd for the ms10a's and what does it give me?

I did some searching but most people seem to be using the ms16's

    thanks

The MS10A's are security motion sensors. Instead of A1 for example, they send a numeric code so they can not be imitated with an X10 remote. The MS10A also sends a "I'm here" message every 90 minutes so that you can see if the battery is dead and do not have dawn/dusk sensor capabilities. They are also quite a bit bigger 4-5 times bigger and come with a mounting bracket. IMO, they function much better than a MS16A but it boils down to what are your needs and how much do you want to spend.

The other thing to remember is that there is a link (http://www.x10.com/promotions/ms10a_...burst_cat.html) to an old offer from X10 where you can get 7 MS10A's for the price of 1. That's what I do whenever I need one.

What receivers can correctly see those MS10a units?

I am pretty sure that both the w800 and the rfxcom units can read the security code from the ms10a

I believe chewie is correct (I use the W800 and can confirm that one).

The W800 and the rfxcom 310MHz unit can. Don't forget there is also a 433 MHz unit for temp sensors.

depends on what you want it for...

they (MS10a) are EXTREMELY larger and the bracket is rediculous too...

but i have one in my shed.... and it works great... 100' away from my w800 antenna which is in my basement....

                    Thanks Guys,

based on this I went with the ms16's

Do the ms10's do battery low like the ds10's?

that link is awesome, got any more 1 for 7's?

I should point out, the security sensors have a 4 element sensor head, the cheaper ones are only a 2 element sensor head. One of the reasons they are more "active" to seeing motion.

Out of curiosity has anyone disassembled an MS10 to see if there is a way to make it a little smaller/prettier? With them having the 4 elements I know they are more sensitive, but man are they ugly when you put them in a corner or something...

you could always put one inside of say a stuffed animal.. and have the motion part be in the mouth... or cut a hole in a pic!!!!

i havent but maybe if i remember i will.. i have 4 sitting there doing nothing... in the box of parts
