Help a newbie with z-stick II and kwikset please - Fixed!

I've downloaded a trial copy of Homeseer pro and updated it to the latest version.

I bought an Aeon Labs Z-stick 2, connected it to Homeseer (I'm on com port 3) and erased it from the interface page just like in the instructions.

I then shut down Homeseer, unplugged the z-stick, took it to my kwikset deadbolt, clicked the blue light button, then clicked the B button on my kwikset deadbolt to add it.

According to the instructions, the blue light is supposed to blink faster when pairing, but in my case it continued to blink at the same rate.

The yellow light on the kwikset came on for about 5 seconds, then went out.

When I took my z-stick back and connected it to homeseer nothing was imported.

I don't think I'm adding my kwikset to the z-stick correctly.

What could I be doing wrong?

I don't think that post applies to my situation.

I do not have a ztroller, and I'm not able to get as far as seeing the lock under node info.

The point of that thread was to bring the lock to your HomeSeer PC with the stick attached and use the Add > Node option from withing HomeSeer. Then move the lock back into it's final destination and wake it and optimize.

Ah, I believe I understand now.

I believe I need to remove the entire inside portion of the deadbolt and bring that to my PC, correct?

I do not recommend this. The entire lock needs to be brought to the HomeSeer server and added. Then reinstalled for the best results. The problem is the lock takes a "long time" to add and nearly all controllers time out before it's complete if it's not connected to your HS server.

              Thanks, Rupp.

I really appreciate all the help.

So far I've been able to add a lamp dimmer and a small appliance (fan) and they were both very simple.

I have a wall switch left to go.

The kwikset deadbolt seems to be a bit more difficult then what I have encountered so far.

Would it be possible to use a laptop, connect to my homeseer web server, and plug my z-stick into my laptop and add the deadbolt that way without having to remove the deadbolt?

Thanks everyone, but I'm not having any success and getting extremely frustrated.

I've taken off the deadbolt and brought it downstairs to my homeseer server.

Restarted the server, inserted the z-stick, started homeseer (no errors in the log).

In interface manager I tried remove node and pressed the B button on the deadbolt (yellow light on the deadbolt came on for a few seconds then went off).

                  Timed out with no activity.

I tried add node and pressed the B button, again yellow light came on for a few seconds then went off.

                  Time out with no activity.

Tried remove node while pressing and holding down the B button. Yellow light came on for a few seconds then went out.

                  Timed out with no activity.

Tried add node while pressing and holding down the B button. Same results with yellow light as before.

                  Timed out with no activity.

Tried remove node and pressed the B button every time the yellow light went off.

                  Timed out with no activity.

Tried add node and pressed the B button every time the yellow light went off.

                  Timed out with no activity.

Erased the z-stick, repeated the above steps and got the same results.

I'm very new to this so I'm sure it is something I'm doing wrong, but for the life of me I can't figure this one out.

Also, when I view my z-stick interface it says I have 1 node even though I erased the stick. Is this correct?

During this are there any errors in the HomeSeer.log file?

In the log I have two errors regarding sonos, but nothing else.

On this attempt I did the following:

                      1.) Reboot server
                      2.) Attach z-stick
                      3.) Start Homeseer
4.) Click Remove Node under interface manage
5.) Click B button on Kwikset deadbolt
                      6.) Received no activity timeout
7.) Click Add Node under interface manage
8.) Click B button on Kwikset deadbolt
                      9.) Received no activity timeout.
                      10.) Shut down homeseer.

If the Z-Stick initializes properly without errors in the log, and the lock is positioned within a foot or two of the Z-Stick, then you're down to a few possibilities:
                        • The Z-Stick is defective
                        • The Lock is defective
                        • The Lock batteries need to be replaced

That's all I can think of.

                          Thanks for the reply, Mark.

I called Kwikset for support regarding this issue and after explaining my problem I was transferred to a technician more experienced in this area.

After confirming the troubleshooting steps I have taken I was told a specialist would call me the next morning.

The next morning I was called by Larry Goldman and I must say the support was fantastic. Larry walked me through a few scenarios and really went the extra mile to educate me on a lot of z-wave concepts.

By the way, Larry (not connected with Homeseer) also highly recommended Homeseer and convinced me to pull the trigger on my purchase. Before this I was also considering Verda2 and CQC but Larry spoke so highly of Homeseer and was so knowledgeable about z-wave it convinced me to make the purchase.

Larry believes the issue could be with the Aeon Labs z-stick and possibly an issue with it reading the encryption on the Kwikset deadbolt.

Just to test, Larry has sent me a new z-wave card for my deadbolt and I will test that as soon as it gets here.

I have also ordered a z-troller with my homeseer pro purchase so if it is an issue with the z-stick I will be able to use the z-troller.

If it is not the Kwikset daughter card or the Aeon Labs z-stick Larry has agreed to send me a new Kwikset deadbolt.

I cannot over emphasize how great the support has been. Much better than any product support I have ever experienced.

For the record; I have a Kwikset lock and a Aeon Zstick II and it works fine.

What version of Homeseer are you running? If you got the trial-- try downloading the latest update rev 2.5.44-- and run that and try again. I am not sure which version the support was added.

                              I'm using 2.5.0.29

I'll download rev 44 later tonight and try it.
