    Want to do some Zwave

Been using HS for years and I have only used X10. I have 99.9% reliability with X10, so I haven't even looked at Zwave yet.
Now I need a new thermostat, ours is pretty old and starting to crap out.
Will not be changing my mind on X10 for everything else, but want to go to Zwave for a new thermostat and I have the wife talked into door locks. We looked at some of the motorized deadbolts at Menards and she liked them.

So just for HVAC and locks, what's the easiest most cost efficient way to go?
I have HS2 and 3, still trying to get the Win7 laptop with HS3 and an Edgeport4 to play nice. See this thread - http://board.homeseer.com/showthread.php?t=170984

    Thanks,
    Tim

The z-Stick and the Z-Wave plugin and the devices are what you need.

This is a good mid level thermostat that seems to work well and looks good as well.

You might wait for the new ztroller to be released. The new troller will be based on the most up to date zwave transmitter.

If you go with the Z-stick

Unless you are lucky with your layout and distances you will need several beaming supported Zwave devices (the new motion sensor, switches, wall module, outlet) just to fill out a stable Zwave network.

Won't know if the new ZTroller will handle a spread out small network until it comes out and we use. It will be better/stronger, but how much ? ?

From the laptop to the current thermostat is about 8 feet.
From the laptop to the front door and back door is about 23 feet and to the basement door 8-10 feet through the floor.
The longest distance will be to the fence gate, about 26 feet, straight line, with 2 walls in between.
Is this a lot for just single devices?

            Thanks,

It's hard to say, but mounting the zwave controller high would help. Thermostats are great devices for routing since they are typically mounted high.
Newer zwave devices, with zwave+, have greatly increased transmission strength.

rmasonjr is right. Do not just plug z-stick into laptop. Use a 6 ft. USB extension cord, both to give it the best mount position and to get it away from interference created by the laptop's other devices (wifi, bluetooth, etc.) Gate is most likely problem. Give it a try. At the worst you may have to add 1 to 3 lamp modules that support beaming. The GE's do at $40 each.

If you need to add distance there's also the Z-Wave repeater as well as the lamp modules. http://store.homeseer.com/store/Aeon...ter-P1644.aspx

Any idea when this will be?
I don't want to wait too long on the thermostat.

                    Thanks,

The last update from Mark was that they were finishing up the cases.

When we get updates, it is alway just another 4 to 6 weeks.

I would go ahead and set up the ZStick, then upgrade to new Z-Troller after it is released and shown to be working. You would then still have the stick as a secondary/backup. It does not cost much.
