Hardware or Software

I'm new to the home automation arena and very interested in the HomeSeer products however i'm a little confused as to what may be need to interface with devices if you go with the HS3 (since the computer itself can't) or one of the hardware controllers?
Is there some documentation that explains what would be needed for a simple Z wave set for example if you went with software or hardware controller?

All you need is the Z-Net shown on the right side of this page a PC or one of HS hardware controllers and some Z-Wave devices.

I am also a new user to homeseer, but not automation. I will say there is a learning curve as it throws the kitchen sink at you. If you are going to make this your first endeavor into home automation. Read a lot and have lots of patience.
