so is there a way to change the access codes to the lock with an event? I'm not finding anything.

Looking to allow a painter in the house during the day but want the code disabled at night for safety reasons

can this be done

Yup, it's possible.

Create an event and set your triggers/conditions.

For the action choose "Z-wave actions" then in the next box "Set a user access code". Then just choose the lock, the "user slot" and add the code.

Make sure your code complies with your lock's rules. For instance, mine have to be 7 digits so I think it will fail if the code i put in there is not 7 digits. Note that you can also remove a code as well by selecting "Remote a user access code" in the second box
