    Choosing the right Homeseer device

    Hi folks,

Looking to buy a Homeseer device to run Z-Wave in the house. Am debating between the HomeTroller Zee S2 & the SmartStick+ USB.

What are the pros/cons of either method? Limitations of going USB? The 1st benefit is price but what am I not seeing being new to this?

Do you need a PC running 24x7 for the USB stick? Not a problem a rarely reboot my desktop PC in my office.

    Thanks!

Welcome to the Homeseer forum jphebert!

I have used USB Z-Wave sticks, ZTroller and internal GPIO Z-Wave Plus card (RPi2). Haven't really noticed differences.

The Zee S2 is a Raspberry Pi computer with a custom for Homeseer OS running on a microSD card.

Today I think that the Zee-2 comes with a USB Z-Wave plus stick.

It used to come with a Z-Wave plus GPIO card.

You do not need a PC running 24/7 if you purchase the Zee S2.

I have always used Homeseer on a dedicated computer here. That is me.

Like Pete said, the Zee S2 comes with the Z-Wave controller built-in - there is no need for SmartStick.

Thanks - does the USB stick come with the Homeseer software like the Zee? If not it is kinda self-defeating for my project

The original Zee came with the stick, but not with the software purchase itself.

Not sure if you are aware, but the Zee's are limited to 5 plugins. That's ok for some, but a lot of people end up exceeding that at some point. I'm personally running 26 plugins, although some of those are just for testing at this point.

              Cheers

FWIW - they have some openbox Zee S2s that are $50 off retail.
That plus the fact that it has Z-Wave built-in makes it a pretty inexpensive way to get going.
