We use Dahua cameras which are small dome types for the exterior and some interior spaces. They are mounted on the ceiling and are unobtrusive. Most are PTZ and cost around $200 a piece. Newer models have "person recognition" meaning that they will track a person and Blue Iris will record their movements.
Went with POE but they do have wifi models. Also use Blue Iris on a seperate core I7 notebook next to my recliner so we can keep an eye on the front for, driveway, etc.
We use a combination of exterior z-wave motion detectors and the cameras' motion detection through BI to trigger various events.
As a side note, the notebook running BI wouldn't run due to a defective power supply. We had to wait nearly a week for a replacement and my wife kept asking me when the cameras would be back up.
