Adding SmartStick+ as secondary controller with S2 enabled?

Ordered a SmartStick+ to be able to add to my existing SmartThings ZWave network (making the SmartStick+ a secondary controller). I can add it to the network, but it won't add with any level of S2 security.

If I add it to SmartThings via the "scan for devices" interface, it gets added as ZWAVE_S0_LEGACY.

If I add it as a "Generic Zwave Device" (picking the device type), then it gets added as ZWAVE_S0_FAILED.

The side effect is that the secondary controller can't talk to any S2 level device on the network. When querying any S2 device they don't respond.

Anyone have any tips or suggestions? Experience using SmartStick+ as a secondary controller with other hubs (specifically SmartThings but other experience helps too).

    Thanks!

Why not move your Z-Wave devices to HS?

I can try that, but ST is said to make a crappy secondary controller. Plus I don't want to leave the SmartStick+ PC powered on all the time. The idea was that ST hub is already wired up and on ethernet.
