Upgrade from HS3 on old PC to HS4 on new HomeTroller Plus

I've been searching and haven't found instructions on the proper way to upgrade from HS3 to HS4 on new hardware. And to make it more complicated, I plan on doing this when I'm at their house on thanksgiving, when there's no support available. So i want to make sure i understand the process.
I'm going to be upgrading my dad's installation from HS3 running on an old PC, to HS4 on a newly purchased hometroller plus. I've never set up HS on HS provided hardware before, so i'm not 100% confident that I understand what to expect with a new hometroller out of the box. I understand that I need to take the copy of the HS3 folder from the old machine when HS is shut down. I think i need to use the alternate method and copy the config and data folders over and manually install plugins, which is really only the Insteon plugin.

Do I need to interrupt HS when the new box first boots and shut it down to copy the data over first? Or do I proceed thru the first run stuff on the new hometroller then shut it down and copy over data? Do I register the new system with MyHS before or after the config is transferred? If I register MyHS to the new installation, will it kill the connection to the old one?

I can answer some -- i went from HS4 on a Server to HS4 on the Linux/Pi based hometroller. That was agony since I was never able to get a clean backup to work from the server. And copying from Windows to Linux was incredibly painful. But the two main methods are either backup to a common place (which BOTH systems need to be able to find) or a simple overwrite of data into the entire Homeseer directory. What I have seen in past posts are that it might be beneficial to go HS3 --> HS4 on the existing box first just so the move is apples to apples. And then do the backup/restore or total copy. Good luck and I know that there are some folks here around on Turkey Day which will reach out if they see something where they can help.
