Pass device string to external program?

I run HS3 on Linux, and use shell scripts for things such as sending SMS messages. Currently I have an event that sends me an SMS if my freezer temperature is too high. It would be nice to include the actual temperature in the message. Is there a way to pass device strings or values on the command line to an external program? I can pass a static command line, but would be nice to include some device data in there.

There must be an easier way, but the only way I can think of is to write the string to a file, then read the file in the external event. Is that an option?

Thanks Mike. I may just end up writing a C# script to handle SMS which could look up the values, or adding code to my current PHP script to talk to the HS JSON API.

I did the latter, added code to my Perl scripts (to talk to the HS JSON API).
