    Navigating the Event Management page

This will cover navigating the Event Management Page.

To Navigate to the Event Management Page, select Events under the View dropdown at the top of the HomeSeer web interface.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events.png Views:	1 Size:	52.7 KB ID:	1270775

When you first open the Event Management page, you will see three Display Filter Dropdowns and a Show All button.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events1.PNG Views:	1 Size:	19.9 KB ID:	1270776

These can be used to narrow the number of Events that are displayed. Here only one Group is selected.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events2.png Views:	1 Size:	33.4 KB ID:	1270786

After you apply a filter by clicking the "x", the page is refreshed, only showing the group(s) on which you have filtered. Just like the Device Management page, you will see that the Events are filtered and how many are shown. Applying any of the three filters works the same way, make your selections, then close the dropdown either by clicking on the x or outside the dropdown. Clicking on "Check All" will stop the filtering on groups, but will not affect other filters that are applied. You can combine filtering by Group, Type and Device as desired.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events3.PNG Views:	1 Size:	19.9 KB ID:	1270777

The triangle in the circle allows you to expand the group, showing all of the Events in the Group

Click image for larger version Name:	Events3a.png Views:	1 Size:	43.4 KB ID:	1270778

If you want to rename a group, you can click on the group name while it is expanded to get a pop up editor.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events3b.PNG Views:	1 Size:	37.1 KB ID:	1270779

You can rename any group, but names may not be duplicated. After renaming a group it will remain where it was until the page is refreshed. When refreshed, the groups will again be sorted alphabetically.

The second dropdown allows you to filter on "Event Types".

Click image for larger version Name:	Events4.png Views:	1 Size:	27.5 KB ID:	1270780

Event Types is another tool for organizing Events. This is only for the purpose of filtering Events. You can make up names as you go and assign the Types to Events. There is no tool for bulk editing, so they must be added one by one, preferably as you build Events. This is very useful for filtering Events and identifying them by Type. All currently used Event Types will be available in the dropdown as well as a selection allowing creating of a new Type.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events4a.png Views:	1 Size:	29.9 KB ID:	1270781

The third dropdown allows you to filter on Device(s). You can pick one or many to identify Events by the Devices involved.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events6.png Views:	1 Size:	39.3 KB ID:	1270782

While these posts are usually limited to native HS3 functions, if you want to further refine your filtering of Events, there is at the time of this posting, one 3rd party enhancement. Jon00's Event Viewer & Documenter script. It will allow you to find events using Counters, Timers and Scripts. It also will allow you to perform a text search and/or filter on "Broken" Events. It will also output an Event listing in CSV or plain text and can be configured to generate these reports from an Event.

Click image for larger version Name:	Jon00.PNG Views:	116 Size:	29.4 KB ID:	1271104

Here the Event list is filtered on the single Device Occupancy Controls Occupancy Mode. There are 71 Events using that device. This is useful in many ways. It only works on Devices, not Timers, Counters, scripts, etc.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events6a.PNG Views:	1 Size:	39.6 KB ID:	1270783

The Show All button will clear all filters and display all Events.

To create a fresh Group, click on the Click image for larger version Name:	Add.png Views:	1 Size:	494 Bytes ID:	1270787 button to create a new Group

Click image for larger version Name:	Events7.png Views:	1 Size:	13.9 KB ID:	1270788

The Group will be named New Group by default, but you will be presented with a Dialog box to enter a new name.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events8.png Views:	1 Size:	18.9 KB ID:	1270784

After naming the Group you will see a single Event named New Event.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events9.PNG Views:	1 Size:	21.2 KB ID:	1270785

Group names exist because they contain Events. If the last Event in a group is deleted, the group is deleted as well. All Events must be in groups, so if you delete a Group, all the Events in the group will also be deleted.

At the top of the group are 4 icons. Like most of HomeSeer's icons, you can hover over an icon and get a tool tip explaining its purpose.

The first one allows you to add a new Event to the group.

Click image for larger version Name:	IconAdd.png Views:	1 Size:	6.3 KB ID:	1270957

The next one will expand all Events in a group.

Click image for larger version Name:	iconExpand.png Views:	1 Size:	7.5 KB ID:	1270958

A group opens with all Events collapsed.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events3a.png Views:	2 Size:	43.4 KB ID:	1270962

When you "Expand All" every Event in the group is expanded so you can see Triggers, Conditions and Actions. Note: This will not work on a filtered view, all Events in the group must be shown.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events3c.PNG Views:	1 Size:	70.0 KB ID:	1270963

The third Icon will be one of two, either showing that editing is in the "Advanced" mode

Click image for larger version Name:	iconAdvanced.png Views:	1 Size:	6.4 KB ID:	1270959

    or in the "Basic" mode

Click image for larger version Name:	iconBasic.png Views:	1 Size:	6.7 KB ID:	1270960

Some Actions have advanced options, which are only available when in the Advanced Editing mode. Clicking or tapping on the icon will toggle the mode. HomeSeer is a little inconsistent here, the Airplane icon at the top of the group indicates that it is in the Advanced mode, however an airplane icon in the action itself toggles it into advanced mode.

Name:	Events3d.png
Views:	643
Size:	30.9 KB
ID:	1271102

If the Action changes to the Advanced mode, the additional settings are shown. In the case of a Device Control Action, this is simply to set or clear the String value for the Device. The Advanced options available for Actions are covered in the Action threads.

Click image for larger version Name:	Events3e.png Views:	1 Size:	32.7 KB ID:	1270965

The final icon will allow you to delete an entire group of Events. Be very careful with this as there is no option to undo the deletion. You will get a confirmation prompt.

Click image for larger version Name:	image_74806.png Views:	1 Size:	6.3 KB ID:	1270961

This covers the group icons, next we will get into the Events.

Above, we created a Demo group. Since a group cannot be Empty a New Empty Event is created.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event1.PNG Views:	1 Size:	35.4 KB ID:	1270986

You will be prompted to rename it. Remember: All Event names must be unique, you cannot use the same name for more than one Event.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event2.png Views:	1 Size:	26.4 KB ID:	1270987

After you have named your Event, it is a good time to assign a Type, if you are using them.

Click image for larger version Name:	event3.png Views:	1 Size:	21.6 KB ID:	1270988

Here we will make it Lighting Control

Click image for larger version Name:	Event4.png Views:	1 Size:	39.7 KB ID:	1270989

While it is unlikely you will do this on a new Event, you can reassign the Event to a different or New group. Events can be reassigned to different Groups at any time.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event5.png Views:	1 Size:	23.7 KB ID:	1270990

If you do reassign an Event to a different Group and it is the only one in the current Group, after the Event is reassigned, the current Group will be deleted. Here I have assigned this new Event to Lighting. The Demo Group is gone and there are now two Events in Lighting. There is an anomaly in how filtering works. If you assign an Event to a new Group you just created, the Events will be filtered only on the new Group, you will need to click on Show All to get back all of your Events. Moving additional Events to the new Group will not exhibit the same behavior.

It is important to note that as you increase the number of Events, Group Reassignment can get a little slow. Be patient, it will happen. You can also reload the page to refresh the Group sorting.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event6.png Views:	1 Size:	24.6 KB ID:	1270991

The Event 1 has been moved back to the Demo group. Now we will create a quick Event to turn lights on at Sunset on Weekends. The Trigger is "sunset". HomeSeer tracks sunrise and sunset times based upon your geographic location entered in Settings. The only Condition is for Weekend Days. The only Action is to turn the Living Room Ceiling Light On

Click image for larger version Name:	Event7.PNG Views:	1 Size:	30.1 KB ID:	1270992

At the top right of the Event are 5 icons. The first will allow you to run the Actions in the Event. As is stated in the tool tip, the Trigger is ignored. What is not stated but must be understood is that the Condition(s) will also be ignored. Clicking this icon will simply execute the Action(s) in the Event. The same is also true when the Event is manually run from Google or Amazon Voice Command, IFTTT, HSTouch, etc. If an Event is manually run from another Event the Trigger is always ignored, but there is an option to honor the Conditions. This option is disabled by default. This option is covered separately under the "Run another Event Action". See the Table of Contents for the Event Clinic Forum. .

Click image for larger version Name:	iconRun.png Views:	1 Size:	8.8 KB ID:	1270993

The next icon is used to Enable or Disable the Event.

Click image for larger version Name:	iconEnable.png Views:	1 Size:	8.3 KB ID:	1270994

Clicking on the icon will toggle the state.

Click image for larger version Name:	iconDisabled.png Views:	1 Size:	8.8 KB ID:	1270995

When an Event is disabled, the Triggers are disabled so that the Event cannot start on its own, but this does not prevent the Event from being launched by another Event or other external means. Because Triggers are ignored when an Event is run manually, a disabled Event can still be run.

The third icon will Expand all lines in the Event

Click image for larger version Name:	iconExpand.png Views:	2 Size:	7.5 KB ID:	1270996

Clicking on this icon will show all Triggers, Conditions and Actions expanded.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event8.PNG Views:	1 Size:	38.0 KB ID:	1270997

Clicking it again will collapse them again.

The fourth icon will delete the Event. Before it is deleted you will get a confirmation prompt.

Click image for larger version Name:	iconDeleteEvent.png Views:	1 Size:	7.8 KB ID:	1270998

The last Icon is to Copy the Event. This will allow you to create a duplicate of the Event. The new Event will have the same name with "- Copy" appended to it.

Click image for larger version Name:	iconCopyEvent.png Views:	1 Size:	8.1 KB ID:	1270999

The copy will be identical to the original. All native HS Triggers, Conditions and Actions will be copied. Some 3rd party Triggers, Conditions and Actions will be copied, but may not have all the details. The event copying feature can save a little time if you use a complex Event shared among a number of similar Devices. After you copy it, Edit the copied Event to assign new Devices. Another thing the Copy function is good for is for diagnosing an Event. You can 1) Copy the Event, 2) Disable the original Event and 3) edit the copy, removing Conditions, modify Triggers, etc. This can help you identify any flaws in the logic of an Event.

        Editing Events.

At the end of each line for Triggers, Conditions and Actions are three Icons. The triangle is to expand the item for editing. The red X is to delete the item and the green + is to add an item.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event1.png Views:	1 Size:	38.3 KB ID:	1271063

While there is the option to delete a trigger, the primary trigger should never be deleted. If you need to change a trigger, expand it and choose a different trigger. If you delete a primary Trigger, the associated Condition will be "promoted" to be a Trigger, but it will not be valid. If all Conditions are deleted from a Trigger, the Trigger can be safely be deleted, but it is best to avoid ever deleting a Trigger. This will be discussed later under Additional Triggers.

Here is an example of what can happen. The Trigger in the above Event was deleted. The Condition was promoted to become a Trigger, but is not a valid trigger. Weekend Days can never be a Trigger. A Trigger MUST be a "moment in time" - Weekend Days would be true for every second over a 48 hour period. Clearly this Event will never run. Also note that the "Delete" icon is no longer on the Trigger, making it impossible to delete the invalid Trigger. You can rescue the Event by choosing a different Trigger (it may take two tries), but it is highly recommended to start over if you end up in this situation.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event3.PNG Views:	1 Size:	24.5 KB ID:	1271064

Going back to the Demo Event

Click image for larger version Name:	Event2.png Views:	1 Size:	30.2 KB ID:	1271065

The + icon beside the Condition (The days of the week are Weekend days) will allow you to add another Condition. When you do this a new line will be created, defaulting to a Condition (AND IF)

Click image for larger version Name:	Event5.PNG Views:	1 Size:	34.5 KB ID:	1271066

Here we will add a Condition that the house is occupied

Click image for larger version Name:	Event6.PNG Views:	1 Size:	36.1 KB ID:	1271067

Now the Living Room light will come on at Sunset on weekends as long as the house is occupied. Now we want the light to come on at a different time on Weekdays. Since it is still the same Action, we can build a new Trigger/Condition set. When a new condition is added, you can choose between AND IF (Condition) or OR IF (additional Trigger).

Remember AND IF is always a Condition - OR IF is always an additional Trigger. Here we will pick OR IF

Click image for larger version Name:	Event7.PNG Views:	1 Size:	41.2 KB ID:	1271068

The first thing to notice is the visual clue of the grey space after the last Condition (AND IF) tells you that you are starting a new Trigger/Condition group. The two Conditions above (Weekend Days and Occupied) will only apply to the Sunset Trigger. Now we will pick a new time for Weekdays - 15 minutes before sunset. We also want this to happen on Weekdays when the house is occupied, so we add the two conditions.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event8.PNG Views:	1 Size:	53.8 KB ID:	1271069

Now we have an Event that will turn the light on at sunset on the weekends, 15 minutes before sunset on weekdays, but only when the house is occupied. We want one more thing - the lights should come on 30 minutes after sunset every day when the house is not occupied. For this we need a new time Trigger with a single Condition that the house is not occupied.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event9.PNG Views:	1 Size:	66.6 KB ID:	1271070

Now we want to add two more Actions turn more lights on. To do this we click the + icon to the right of the action

Click image for larger version Name:	Event10.PNG Views:	1 Size:	73.0 KB ID:	1271071

Now we will add the additional two lights

Click image for larger version Name:	Event11.PNG Views:	1 Size:	77.4 KB ID:	1271072

Note that you can control two or more Devices under a single action if you desire. It is usually preferable to put each device control under a separate action if you are controlling physical devices such as a Z-Wave switch or dimmer to keep from sending too much traffic at once. An Action can also be disabled by changing THEN to NEVER.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event12.PNG Views:	1 Size:	76.4 KB ID:	1271073

Now the Event will not turn the Ceiling Light On, just the Table Lamps. Changing NEVER back to THEN will enable the action again.

The last thing to cover in this section is the ability to reorder actions. This can be done on a computer with a mouse, but cannot be done on a tablet. Click and hold on the darker green area of an action to the left of the Expand icon and drag it up or down. Here I have moved the Table Lights to be the first Action.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event13.PNG Views:	1 Size:	76.2 KB ID:	1271074

You will note that in the above Event there are 3 groups of Triggers and Conditions. All three are independent. any Condition only applies to the Trigger in the same Group. Again the grey space is a visual clue to the separation among the groups.

        To be continued...

Now we will copy an Event. Using the last Event pictured above, we will use the copy Event icon. Note that it is an exact duplicate with "- Copy" appended to the name.

Click image for larger version Name:	Event14.PNG Views:	1 Size:	76.7 KB ID:	1271085

If you are trying to troubleshoot the original Event you can disable it and edit the copy to identify possible issues. You can remove conditions or entire Trigger/Condition groups - except the primary Trigger. Here the copy had been edited back down down to two groups with a single condition on each to test if it works without the occupancy Device.

You're welcome. I'm just trying to get caught up on things I left unfinished from a couple of years ago. I hope to get everything in the Event Clinic table of contents done in the next week or so.

Sheet.... I've had HS3 since it came out and never noticed that you could open all the events in a group at once... Hard to believe that HS3 is almost 6 years old now...
