Please point me to the appropriate thread. I'm trying to understand when and why you would use group conditions and group actions.

They are both covered in the Event Clinic Forum, here and here. Both are designed to reduce the creation of Conditions or Actions, when a number of Events share common Conditions or Actions. It would be quite rare that a number of Events would share common actions as this can easily be accomplished by multiple triggers in a single Event. I have run into only a couple of circumstances where a Group Conditions really save time or effort in creating a Events, and even then the savings are slight.
