Pretty much the same animal with a different name isn't it? All of my "scenes" are events driven by a virtual device.

That was my thought but I've been informed differently before hence the post. I think that scene are probability from the early days and evolved to events, but as folks may have scenes still working HS3 provides for both. From my VERA experience they only use scenes and/or LUA scripts and do not have events. Mike

There are some switches that can be programmed to activate other devices by programming a scene within the switch. I would still recommend creating events as scenes aren't available in all switches and they tend not to be well supported by HS3 in the ones that do offer this functionality.

Gregory, thanxs for the explanation. As I was traveling the path of HS3 enlightenment I happen upon the scene tab hence the inquiry. So the net is use events unless I might have a device that can faciliate scenes. Mike

It's just a naming scheme... Homeseer Events = Vera Scenes.

Rupp points out something outside of the naming scheme, which is hardware specific. Also called, scenes or linking. He's also correct that unless you have a specific reason to use linking (which there are potential a few) you should be using events

well, if you've got "scenes" nailed down, want to take a stab at "devices"?

I'll go first:

Devices can refer to products installed in the home, like light switches and thermostats. Those things are 'devices'. It can also refer to a software representation of a product (ie HomeSeer devices). It can also refer to a software representation of a state or status (ie "virtual" devices). Confused yet? Naw... me neither...

Scenes, unless I'm mistaken, stem from the early days of automation. They are basically a collection of actions with no real logic to them which are uploaded to a device/controller. Press a button on the controller and it directly sets device A, B, and C to value x. The nice thing about a scene, once it's uploaded to the device, is that it's independent of the home controller software.
The downside is that since the scene controller controls the device directly it doesn't report the change to the home control software.

An event on the other hand runs within the home controller software. An event can do anything a scene can but also provides logic which makes them very powerful. want your living room lights to come in if you open the front door but only if it's after sunset; you'll need an event for that. The downside is that if the home control software is down, your events don't run.

My feeling is that scenes are depreciated with minimal homeseer support
