    HS3 Teaser - Events #1

As we're getting pretty close on the HS3 beta, thought you all might like a little snippet of what we've been doing all this time. Here's a view of the new event 'engine'. The architecture looks something like this:

    Event Group 1
    Event Group 2
    Event Group 3
    -Event 1
    -Event 2
    -Event 3
    -Trigger/Condition 1
    -Trigger/Condition 2
    -Action 1
    -Action 2
    -Group Conditions
    -Group Actions
    Event Group 4
    Event Group 5

HS3 users will organize events by Groups. There's no limit to the number of groups. Each group can contain an unlimited number of events. Each event can have its own triggers, conditions and actions. Each group can also have conditons and actions. Events can be set to use the group conditions and actions or ignore them on an individual basis.

With this in mind, you could create a group "Manage Lighting" and put all your lighting events in the group. With one group condition (like "I'm on vacation"), you can affect any or all the events in the group.

In this example, there are 3 events in the "Manage Lighting" group and the "Sunset" event has been expanded. There are 3 different triggers in the Sunset event (the blue sections) and two of them are contingent on state of the "group conditons". The net effect is that lights will go on at sunset during the weekdays if the home is occupied or lights will go on 1 hour before sunset everday if the house is unoccupied.

Obviously, this could be accomplished in other ways using multiple events or by creating multiple groups ("Manage Lighting when Home is Occupied", "Manage Lighting when Home is UnOccupied", etc).

Anyway, there's a taste of things to come. Hang in there... won't be too long before we can roll out the details for the first beta.

    Hi macromark,

Thanks for the update. This looks great and it looks like this will cut down lots of my events.

    Keep up the good work.

This is good to see. Fragmented "eventware" is a problem for me right now, would love to be able to logically group lighting and hvac activites like this.

I realize that I only change this kind of logic every so often, but I guess that's the point.... I could come back to this 6 months to a year later and remember all of the nuances associated with tightly integrated events (before tweaking it and shooting myself in the foot)

LOL. I bet there are nearly in infinite number of ways for me to make a hash of this.

Then add in the events I already have that I modify (poorly) to fit the new scheme. I could be at this transition to HS3 for the rest of my life.

I think a lot of folks will benefit from the workflow and organizational changes... particularly those with hundreds of events. In HS2, we did have event "groups" but they were mostly used to identify event types. In HS3, we have both event groups AND event types.

                    Hi Mark,

Apologies if this has been asked before, but do you have a rough idea on what the expected cost would be of the HS3 / HS3 Pro / HSTouch system (software) would be, keen to start saving

First baby on the way, so not as much 'free reign' with the significant other as there was before

Is there an option to have conditions on Actions?

For me the MOST important thing is... will it be an upgrade? ie: will all my existing events carry over? or is HS3 completely different requiring setup from scratch?

There will be enough changes that you will want to start over to ensure a clean starting point.

The bird signifies standard editing mode. Here's what advanced looks like:

                              So matter-of fact!

While I'm not surprised, nor do I think that starting over is an unreasonable expectation, as far as I know this is the first explicit statement to that effect. I think it would be useful to make this point much more emphatically so current users are more likely to be aware of it.
