    Rheem EcoNet Water Heater

I just installed a new HB50 Hybrid electric water heater with the econet interface and would like to control it from Homeseer (of course). It supposedly has an open API http://io.myrheem.com/.

    Has anybody attempted this yet?

It would be cool to see the current Upper and Lower tank temperatures and control the current mode. I envision setting it to high demand mode for morning showers and then heat pump only during the day.

Maybe just a script could handle it but I've only dabbled in programming.

I asked Rheem Where to get info on communicating with their econet products and here is thier response.

". While we do have an open API, it's currently only open and available to our strategic partners. However, we are in the process of completing our developer portal and will open up various parts of the EcoNet API there.

Our goal is to have this available sometime in Q1 of 2015. I will make a note to notify you when this is available.

In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to email with any additional questions or comments.

    Thanks

    Brian

I'm in the market for a Hybrid electric water heater and was checking the boards to see if ANY of them had any way to manage them remotely (via HS).

I have an oil furnace that is less than 10 years old so it doesn't make sense to change that but hot water comes from the furnace. So the furnace runs all summer when its already HOT outside! What a Waste!

I was thinking of installing a solar thermal system so I could turn the furnace off all summer but it's pretty complicated with all the insulated piping and stuff. But a hybrid elec water heater is perfect!

So the next question is do any of them have any way to control them via HS?

http://www.rheem.com/product/residen...brid-heat-pump as you mentioned above has EcoNet "compatibility". I sent in a contact form to see if they will share any details at all but I suspect they are doing another island product that ONLY talks to their APP. Ugh.

But I'd be more than happy to HACK IT!

On the other hand these things are not cheap so I wouldn't want to blow it up either!

Any ideas what the EcoNet interface is? I would assume some sort of RS232/485 running at 9600 baud.

Are you looking to just turn it on and off based on schedule? The Z wave or Insteon Heavy Duty switches can do that.

The econet is wifi that has a setup procedure very much like the chrome cast. I assume it just sends packets once in while to the rheem website that looks like this.

I wouldn't switch power on and off to it because it would defeat the purpose of the heat pump which takes time to bring the water up to temperature. For homeseer it would be nice to see the details of the water heater which I cant see from the web site such as upper and lower tank temperature and weather or not the elements are running or the heat pump is running. Also changing from eco mode to high demand for morning showers would be good as well as vacation mode which keeps the water temp at 80F degrees while on vacation.

I got a $500 rebate from my electric company on the purchase which brought the price down to close to a regular water heater. so it should pay for itself pretty quickly if the savings are true.

Any update on this? My 20 year old water heater is giving out and I think I'll be replacing it this weekend. I'm looking at the Rheem EcoNet version as my replacement.

                  Thanks!

I'll be watching this thread as well. Wondering how hard it would be to program a plugin. . .

Any of the developers could do it right now if they wanted to as I believe API has been released.

Do you have a link you can share? I still only see an API for getting service partner info onto your website (useless) and an API that is only for it's registered partners, not the general masses.

It seems if you pick EcoNet from the dropdown found here, you will see the documentation you might need. I haven't tried to dig in too much yet or signed up as a developer.

Was my link helpful? I finally can load plugins on my HS3 (went from Zee1 to HS3 Standard on Linux). I would like to get this integrated, but haven't had a chance to study the same plugin code.

Unfortunately no, it still looks like their API is only for getting product and warranty information. Too bad to, I would totally make a plugin to control my water heater.
