Get a USBUIRT. Use the BLUSBUIRT plugin to trigger X10 commands based on received IR codes.

The HS machine is not located nearby to the source of the IR, so based on what I understand this solution may not be for me. However, I wonder how well this thing works as a self-powered extender and then it might be good.

I don't know how far you could extend the USB cable, you could try.
You could also try a Powermid to wirelessly extend the IR signal to your HS computer.
