I regularly see these error messages in the log. Does anyone else get these errors, and anyone know what they mean and how to correct whatever is causing them?

I believe the update control file is going to be the updater control file that whenever you go into the updater it downloads a list of plugins and their capabilities/versions. If so it is a harmless enough error it may just be because it has not been able to connect to the updater server that one time. I would just try going into the updater manually and seeing whether everything works OK.
