Linking virtual device to other physical devices?

I want to create a VD called "down stairs lights" so I can turn on/off all of my downstairs lights with it. I know I can do this with events but was wondering if there is another way of doing it like associating with with the physical devices instead?

Essytrigger groups is what I would use. But I presume z-wave groups could be used. But I see no advantage compared to doing it in Homeseer.

I checked this out but can't figure how to make a group of devices controlled by a virtual device. Wouldn't I just use a regular event to control the devices?
