    OK, I've got questions...

I've got a few hours under the hood with HS4 and have run into some very general, but major, issues.
    • Where did all of the help files and documents go? There is very little left on the website and most of that consists of stubs. I'm referring to HST documents and PI authors, too. I bought a PI, today, and it came without ANY explanation and no joy in my /Docs folder.
    • What happened to the "Deselect All" button when choosing devices (and probably, Events, I forgot to check)?
    • I know you folks are proud as Punch of all of your Homeseer Blue branding, but many of us that have old eyes don't want the text to be in blue. There is a valid reason for this, too... the human eye cannot focus on blue and after a couple of hours trying, it just plain hurts. I know I can go in and diddle the .css files, but it would really be nice if we had a few canned display styles to choose from. I know the cellphone crowd would be over the moon if they had one of those modern "Dark" styles.

    Explanation:

That bright blue LED light, found on many electronic devices, may be the cause of eye strain, headaches, and even sleep disruption.

Blue light causes more trouble for the eye than other colors. That is because it is harder for the eye to focus blue sharply. Different wavelengths of light (i.e. different colors) have different refractive indexes as they pass through the eyeball to the retina. Our eyes can easily focus on fine details in red or green light.

But our retinas can’t handle blue light very well. Blue light scatters more widely within the eye and tends to be focused in front of the retina, making it appear slightly out of focus. What we notice is a kind of halo around bright blue lights. They also seem to produce more glare. So blue light can lead to eye strain and headaches as your eye muscles strain to bring fine details into focus.

The problem is compounded when the light source is an LED. Because of a difference in the manufacturing process, blue LEDs are different from other colors. They can be up to 20 times brighter than traditional red or green LEDs.

Blue lights are more noticeable in the dark or in dim light because the rods (a type of photoreceptor in the retina) are most sensitive to greenish-blue light. And since there are more rods in the outer edge of the retina, blue lights appear brighter in our peripheral vision in low-light conditions. That’s why a tiny blue LED can be so distracting in a dark room, even if it’s in your peripheral vision.

But beyond being a distraction, blue lights are known to affect our circadian rhythm and sleep patterns. Exposure to blue light suppresses the production of melatonin. Melatonin is known as the “sleep hormone” and is produced by the pineal gland, a pea-sized gland in the middle of your brain. You sleep when melatonin levels are high and awaken when melatonin drops.

Even a very low level of blue light, such as that produced by a single bright LED, can suppress melatonin levels, leading to wakefulness. This means anything with a blue LED in your bedroom has the potential of disrupting your sleep cycle. This can be the tiny blue light on your phone charger, the power button of your laptop, or accessories such as speaker lights. If this is the case, try unplugging the device, removing it to another room, or covering the LED so you can’t see the light. You may sleep better for it.

I think I can help you with this one:

First, there is the Enable Bulk Action icon on the right of the Devices screen to get the Bulk Action Checkboxes to show. This changes to Disable Bulk Action to hide them. Leaving them Enabled will keep the checkboxes showing between browser and page instances. Meaning browse to Events then come back to Devices and if they were Enabled before, they are still Enabled.

For the Bulk Action Select/Deselect all, check the box next to the Bulk Option drop down, which will appear on the left side of the screen, to Select All and then check the checkmark to Deselect All. Works even if you have deselected some individual items. Disabling the Bulk Actions also deselects the items.

I do not recall the ability to select multiple Events. If it did exist in HS3 I did not use such. I see no option in HS4 but could be wrong. If the URL for the HS3 Events screen was different than the URL for the HS4 version, try using that URL to view the HS3 version of the screen. I know this works for devices by changing the URL ending from
    .../devices.html
    to
    .../deviceutility
but I do not have HS3 running to check the URL. Basically most if not all of the HS3 pages are supposedly still available. I have not checked any outside the Devices page.

I think we may be on different versions. I'm on 4.2.0.0 and on the right, I have 4 icons not 5 like you. Also, /deviceutility gives me a mostly unpopulated page, it is broken. I'll hold off on the latest (4.2.0.5, I think) until it comes out of beta. Thanks for answering!

It's safe to upgrade to 4.2.0.5, which fixes several bugs. Generally speaking, HS4 betas are fixing bugs brought up here on this forum, or making changes to the presentation of information on the website. They can easily be reverted back if you don't like the change, or if the beta actually does break something.

You are the first person to ever mention the blue font color. As it is unlikely that you will spend more than a few minutes per hour looking at the fonts on that web page, it is not causing significant eye strain, compared to much greater sources of blue light. The meaningful concern is more about ambient light, such as that produced by "cool white" LED lighting on computer displays That sort of light energy is what you should really be concerned about. That problem can be minimized by using your operating system's nighttime mode or otherwise switching to a warmer display profile. "Dark mode" also helps minimize the amount of white or bluish-white light energy.

I am on 4.1.18.0 and I also have the bulk edit, i.e. the 5 buttons on the right. Are you sure you are on the device page? I am not sure what you mean with the deselect all, though. Are you referring to when you filter according to floor, room or category? If so, you only see the "clear all" after you click on "Select All". And the selection process is different compared to HS3. In HS3 by default all are selected. In HS4 by default none are selected which means all are selected. Go figure but that is actually how many websites also work.

I did see documentation disappearing including in plugin. I think you just have to search for it online.

As for the color scheme it seems HS just wants to follow the terrible trend of many other applications where there is so little contrast and where it is impossible to tell where to resize "sub windows" without moving your cursor around and seeing when the cursor icon changes. There is a custom.css file in the main directory, though. You probably can use that to make modifications. I haven't tried it. You might also want to check jon00 plugins. Maybe he has something that allows you to modify that custom.css file in an easy way.

I am on version 4.2.0.0 as well. Running on Windows.

Which icon are you missing? I'm almost wondering, based on the missing icon and your description of the deviceutility page, if you have a complete installation. OR some browser page caching issue. Clear the cache and check that. I know I had a cache issue when I went from HomeSeer 3 to 4.

I can't recall if this changed recently but 4.2.0.5 does have the bulk edit button on the right, and the select/deselect check-box on the left. The box isn't labeled, but clicking it once selects all, then clicking again de-selects all.

This is not the first time (by a long shot) to complain about blue font colors. It isn't just HST and I get it because blue is my favorite color, but there is a time and place for everything. I'm currently re-doing a lot of my system. As I learn more about VB.Net, I am moving away from the Event Engine as much of anything but a repository of triggers, so I am spending a larger period of time looking at blue.

I don't find ambient light to be a problem when facing the computer screen, which, as I type this, is on night mode and has a warmer color temperature. "Dark mode" is growing on me as there is sufficient contrast to be utilitarian.

OK, the 5 buttons are here and I must be losing my mind, if CTRL + and CTRL - didn't bite me in the *ss. To make this more clear, I vote that the selection of Device, Events, Etc... be highlighted. That would be a lot less ambiguous. I'm coming off of what HS3 had and they didn't employ "Select All" as a toggle. I see how that works now, so thanks to all for that explanation. I guess it does serve to de-clutter.

I did, but came up with very little. For example:

Well put. Maybe contrast is the most important concept. Certainly, the "Dark Style" is growing on me. I don't find it attractive, but it is easy to read.

I have deferred that as rjh is working on 4.2.0.5 and I don't want to confuse the issues by potentially screwing up his changes. I have, also, spotted this and have it in the back of my mind.

You might want to look at the Node Red integration. Not only do I find it easier to use than VB.net, it gives you additional integration with items which may not have a HomeSeer plugin, or may require a paid one which might not be worth the cost for that one, sending used, use case. Admittedly I have a lot of JavaScript experience, which helped with understanding some Node Red concepts. The biggest thing, though, is that I don't have to look for obscure hs.something() references. I'm not saying VB.net doesn't have use, there are some things, such as creating virtual devices, which cannot be done via Node Red. If you just intend to control devices or fire off an event, though, look at Node Red.

That is certainly on my to-do list. I have a little bit of very old-school Basic experience and I've done a little JavaScript in creating web pages, but the learning curve for all of the associated new bits and pieces is quite steep. NodeRed is one of the items that pushed me over the 50% mark to try HS4. I want to become more proficient with this new UI before I get in deeper. Some of the simplest things under HS3 seem intensely cryptic or undoable thus far in HS4.

I would drop the VB stuff and jump into the Node Red side. There are 3 main hurtles to overcome with Node Red:
                          1. Flow Based visual programming - Using different "Nodes" to do each step, such as go to different sections of a program (switch/case and if/then type scenarios).
                          2. The idea that an Object is passed to each Node for variables. If you understand a JavaScript Object then this is much easier as it is the same thing. Just accessing the Object kay/value pairs is a LITTLE different.
                          3. The idea that any Node can completely change a part of the passed object, the "payload" key and that the idea is that a Node does not necessarily need to know the information from another Node EXCEPT the one feeding into it. This is tough to put into words, and sounds daunting, but it only means you store things under something different than the msg.payload key if you want to use it later.
Set it up and try reproducing a basic VB.net routine. Controlling a HomeSeer Device is REAL simple, as is initiating a program based on a device changing. Ask questions in the Node Red sub-forum and you will be on your way very quickly.

The UI change was the biggest thing for me in moving to HS4. I did a completely fresh install/upgrade. Meaning I did not move things from HS3 to HS4 but manually recreated the Events. This did break my HSTouch interface because devices came in with different Device ID's but I had an issue or two with a couple items in HS3 and when I ported over all the HS3 stuff the problems followed me. When I recreated everything from scratch, they did not. Notably was one regarding Events. At some point something became corrupt in my HS3 Events. As for the HSTouch interface, we have not used that in a long time and I may recreate it, but the few things we manually control with our phones can be done easily with a dashboard in the mobile client.

Which icon are you missing? I'm almost wondering, based on the missing icon and your description of the deviceutility page, if you have a complete installation. OR some browser page caching issue. Clear the cache and check that. I know I had a cache issue when I went from HomeSeer 3 to 4.
I was missing the "bulk" icon, I think as the example was pretty small, but it is there, now. I don't know if this was a problem with increasing the browser window size, the unlikely chance I wasn't truly on the "Device" page, or a cache issue. As I stated earlier, changing the background for those top row selections would be helpful.

                            Crap. http://[Your_IP:Your_Port]/deviceutility.html still doesn't work....

Actually, it never did. It should have been http://[Your_IP:Your_Port]/deviceutility ... that works!

For the HS3 page, http://192.168.1.10:8008/deviceutility I do not have the .html at the end. Make sure the Display Filters are set to display everything. Each of the 3 filtering options has the Check All option, as shown in the Device Types below. The Show All button should get this for you, but double check to be sure.
