Thinking of Moving from HS3 to HS4

    Hello all,

I have been using HS for along time. I am currently at HS3 on a Hometroller S6. I live off grid and rely on my HS system for some very critical things. I have been reluctant to upgrade because I hate the idea of messing up my system.

My question is, is HS4 stable? Is the upgrade process fairly straight forward? In your opinion would you make the change or stay with HS3 for awhile yet?

ldragon99 Solid and reliable if not a bit quirky at times. Not that it crashes, but some things are just different. Soon enough all the nitty things will be worked out then HS5 will come over the horizon.

Thanks. I have been using HS since almost the beginning. You are right about new ones coming. I usually jumped on the bandwagon when new releases came out, but I have allot that depends on it now so am a bit more cautious. I did do some research on the process yesterday and it seems pretty good from the upgrade point of view.

Thanks for the helps guys. I guess I will make the leap.

Please report back your experience. I'm still sitting on the fence. If anything, I'll finally upgrade prior to the end of March since I depend on Dark Sky in my WeatherXML plugin.
HS3PRO 3.0.0.500 as a Fire Daemon service, Windows 2016 Server Std Intel Core i5 PC HTPC Slim SFF 4GB, 120GB SSD drive, WLG800, RFXCom, TI103,NetCam, UltraNetcam3, BLBackup, CurrentCost 3P Rain8Net, MCsSprinker, HSTouch, Ademco Security plugin/AD2USB, JowiHue, various Oregon Scientific temp/humidity sensors, Z-Net, Zsmoke, Aeron Labs micro switches, Amazon Echo Dots, WS+, WD+ ... on and on.

I thought Dark Sky API was being withdrawn March 2023 not March 2022?

As March has already past, the implication is March 2023.

I will let you know how it goes. Funny enough, weather is one of the things that has made me move forward. I use weatherflow as my weather station and use the solar radiation from that to help determain when some of my solar events should happen. I see there is a HS4 plugin that I can use to also feed my weather forecast from weatherflow into HS. Not the only reason, but just one more on the list that is making move forward.

So quick update. I decided to take the plunge yesterday and updated. Things went very smooth. there are still some issues and will take awhile to get used to the new layout, but overall, no major issues

What approach did you use? Do you have an HS3 folder with HS4 in it. I believe this is the preferred method. Or like some, renamed it to HS4 then upgraded?

I followed the guild that was emailed to me when I bought the plugin. Yes the preferred method is to backup HS3, then uninstall HS3 but keep all of the config and data when asked by the uninstall. Then install HS4 in HS3 directory.

Once done I reselected my config in setup and everything worked. A few error s in the logs but those are plugin related and I am cleaning them up.

I used the method you'd use to move to a new machine. Shutdown HS3 and make a full backup. Install HS4 in its default directory and then restore the HS3 backup over top the HS4 installation. Start HS4 and complete the registration process. If you have any events that run scripts, you'll need to fix those up as the script path in HS3 is an absolute path and therefore, will be pointing to the HS3 scripts directory. The value of doing it this way is you can bounce back and forth between HS3 and HS4, as long as you don't run both at the same time.

kenm Do you mean the default HS4 directory like a fresh install? Then you clobbered the HS4 install by over writing the HS3 backup on top?

I'd love to be able to revert back to my HS3 while preserving the HS4 upgrade should I need.

Sorry... not totally clear for me. It might just be me.

Oh my goodness. So sorry. I said it backwards. I guess I needed less coffee this morning. Shutdown HS3 and make a full backup (.ZIP) of the HS3 directory, "C:\Program File (x86)\HomeSeer HS3". Unarchive the backup to "C:\Program File (x86)\HomeSeer HS4", then install HS4 to its default location which will be over top of the HS3 copy. You can also just make a copy of the entire HS3 folder and rename the copy. Start up HS4 and complete the registration. Edit any events in HS4 that call scripts as stated previously.

                              Perfect. That makes sense.

                              Thanks
