Nothing should be overwritten. The only important setting is the device address - I check if particular device exists using the unique address. I.e. if you delete a device and restart the plugin - the device will be re-created. And that's the only setting you can't change.
For any other setting - I set initial values, but then you should be free to modify anything - it shouldn't affect plugin functionality.
