Rather than creating an entirely separate device for normal vs beta, have you considered just making it include beta versions in the logic when deciding if there's a newer version available? IMO, monitoring a single device per plugin and being told "Newer Version Available" or "Newer Beta Version Available" would be much easier. And those who aren't interested in betas can ignore changes to the beta version since that state isn't of interest to them.
