Periodic Z-wave warning on COM port, what gives?

Following instructions found on the forums, I have a RPi3 with HS4Pi installed manually so I do not have to use an SD card for the OS / storage and thus avoid R/W and device failures, most recently experienced with a top of the line Samsung.

Everything appears to be working but initially struggled with assigning the COM port to the Aeon Gen 5 Z-stick, eventually got that set and things appear to be working, however, I get a COM error periodically as shown below. Perhaps some other process is opportunistically stealing the COM port and making it unavailable temporarily? Keyboard, mouse?

It's an obscure issue but any help is appreciated. If I figure it out I'll post below.
