    Device Address

    Hi all,

I've just update from HS3 Pro to HS4 Pro and I can't find the Device Address. All my devices are controlled by Device Address. Please, can someone help me to find that?

    Thx.

      Hi Pierre!
Thanks so much! When I turned it on, I've noticed that I can only see it in the devices list, however, I can't edit the information and I can't change it when creating new devices neither.

Please, is there something I am missing?

      Merci,
      Fernando.

        Fernando,
I believe device a addresses are no use, and you do not need them, unless you are still using X-10 devices. Ref cannot be changed, and it is very useful. This way, if you change the name of the devices, all your events will be still functioning.
Device ref is very easy to use in scripts, if you want it this way, but in HS4 you not need nor the address and ref.
I have been using X-10 and scripts with Homeseer, but since HS3, it is easier to use events, except for -some- events you do not need adress or scripts.

        Saudações.
        Pierre

The Device Address is not the same as the old X10 Code. While it is not unique as is Ref, there are still reasons to want access to it. The UPB plugin puts the UPB unit and network numbers in it, and several of JON00 scripts take either the Address or the Ref.

            tenhold,
            Thank you for this post.
The "average user" that I am really thought that addresses where no use, since HS does not use them any more in the GUI.
I now better understand how difficult it is to write plugins, and to catch-up with versions of HS. Can we be sure that addresses will be used in HS5 ?
After a few month trying to use the GUI/events, I am seriously thinking of going back to scripting, I might have a use there for addresses, who knows.

                Bonjour Pierre, Hi tenholde.

                Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Let me explain my case... I have many relay modules, which are cabled and uses serial (com ports) communication. Each module has a physical address and they are mapped into homeseer using the physical address and the relay #. So, I created in HS3 Pro one device for each relay. Then one event for each device, triggered by the device status change and running a vb script.

I purchased a HS4 upgrade license, once in anywhere I saw that homeseer planned to remove that functionality. I opened a ticket in the support too, asking how to handle that, and the response I've got was to ask in the forum for that to plugin developers. Sincerely a response that, in my opinion, doesn't make sense, because in one generation you have functionality and in the new generation it is not there.

I am attaching some screenshots showing my relay device, my HS homeseer and the event/script.

I really hope to have a solution (from Homeseer) for that.

                Merci / Thanks,
                Fernando.

                  Fernando,

The HS3 interface is still available in HS4 for such circumstances so you can use this to set the address in there. Just use http://Homeseer IP: Homeseer Port/deviceutility in your browser to view it. I would also recommend installing Jon00 Links script as this will give you shortcuts to the pages from the HS header.

                      Hi enigmatheatre!

That is what I need... and support didn't tell me. You've given me the solution! You are a Rockstar!

I just came across this thread. I needed device address for us in variables in events. They are used by variables in events.

I use the rnbWeather plug in and wanted a Daily Summary device that includes more information than the existing summary device. When constructing UI's it is often way easier to use a custom device rather than gluing together several device values and statuses on the client side.

I have an event on OpenWeatherMonthlyAPIusage change, where I rebuild my 8 daily summaries using $$DSA:,<device address>: of several weather devices.

Using addresses was WAY more convenient than using reference. The Addresses for rnbWeather look like this:

                          dfd20220429083045day0max

so copying my formula down through the various days and objects was simply needing to change day number and weather value.

Using the Reference version of the device would mean looking up many many references and being sure to use the right one, and then just looking at the code would not confirm I actually had it right.

Thanks Pierre for your tip on how to turn on addresses in the view.

There are many variables in scope in events that use address.
